If you are avoiding gluten for any reason, you should avoid McDonald’s as well. The gluten free McDonald’s options are limited and the risk of cross contamination is very high.

McDonald’s Online Menu… It’s Detailed
I need to give credit to McDonald’s though. Their online menu is really impressive and comprehensive. They list out detailed allergy information and spell it out very clearly.
For example, you would think hash browns are gluten free, but the hash browns at McDonald’s are not gluten free. Check it out on their menu. They do a very good job stating exactly what makes it contain gluten and they even go so far as to state, the hash browns are “Cooked In The Same Fryer That We Use For Donut Sticks Which Contain A Wheat And Milk Allergen.”
It’s pretty clear where this menu item stands and upon further review of their menu, all menu items have the same detail. I do appreciate the clarity.
Are McDonald’s Fries Gluten Free?
Nope… McDonald’s french fries are NOT gluten free. Even on the menu on their website, it states “contains wheat.” This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about their food. Typically french fries are not gluten free due to the dual use fryer in the kitchen. You would think french fries would be naturally gluten free, but not at McDonald’s.
According to their ingredient list, they use a natural beef flavor which contains wheat. I’m actually impressed that they disclose what is in their “natural flavor,” because typically, companies use that to hide ingredients. So well done there!
I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news though. Don’t worry, there are other delicious french fries out there that are safer such as Five Guys!

So what is Gluten free?
Not a lot… from what I can see salads are generally Ok. I’ve had the Premium Bacon Ranch Salad and it was actually really good. A decent size as well. Do you really go to McDonald’s for the salad though?
Many of the McCafe drinks and coffees are listed as not containing gluten. Note that I did not say “gluten free.” You won’t see that at McDonald’s. So again, be very careful and mindful of what you may order.
Ice cream and M&M Mcflurry looks like it might be a decent option as well. Our kids enjoy the McDonald’s ice cream with fudge from time to time… I might as well!

The Verdict
I cannot recommend McDonald’s regardless of diet preference. I used to love their Big Mac, and still dream of it to this day, but my health is more important to me. Personally, I feel my burger recipe is way better, but don’t just take my word for it!
What do you think? I’d love to hear opinions and experiences from anyone. Leave some comments below!

Ice cream!
I scream, you scream!… one of the few gluten free items at McDonald’s!
Lenny
Come to Canada – you can eat McDonald’s fries, sundaes and even try some Canadian poutine!
They have better gluten free options across the border?! give me a sec and let me go pack my bag! haha
Is McDonalds oatmeal with fruit gluten free?
So it “should be,” but there is a lot on controversy with oats. They are typically processed in the same facility and with same equipment as wheat. It will depend on your needs honestly. They are definitely not certified gluten free oats.
